Spekter with the Minister of Culture Dr Asta Vrečko and designer David Tavčar
Public guided tour of the refreshed exhibition of the UGM Collection
UGM, Strossmayerjeva ulica 6
Sunday, 11 May 2025, 16:00–18:00
The exhibition Spekter. 70 Years of the UGM Collection has been the subject of much media coverage and public debate, attracting 20.000 visitors from home and abroad, and has recently undergone a refresh. The second year of the Spekter's life is marked by a visit and public guided tour by the Minister of Culture, Dr Asta Vrečko, who, together with the exhibition's author David Tavčar, will discover iconic, lesser-known or first-time exhibited works from the UGM Collection and present the starting points and objectives of the original installation.
Dr Asta Vrečko is an art historian and an expert on the period of Slovenian art between the two wars. David Tavčar is an industrial designer and the author of the exhibition installation on the occasion of the UGM's 70th anniversary. The guided tour will focus on the period of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, a time when Slovenian artists were confronted with turbulent political and social developments, while at the same time establishing their own artistic expression in the context of European realism. These are also the subject of the recently opened exhibition European Realities at the Museum Gunzenhauser in the European Capital of Culture Chemnitz 2025, where UGM is also participating with some of the most prominent works from the collection.
“The current layout of the Maribor Art Gallery's collection is one of a series that creates social noise ... and reduces the chances of one dominant model taking hold.” (Lilijana Stepančič in Likovne besede).
Admission is free. Participation in the guided tour is free of charge.
We invite you to spend Sunday, 11 May, in the gallery and celebrate art and artists! The guided tour will be followed by a refreshments.
