From plan to construction / exhibition opening
Projects of the Ljubljana Faculty of Architecture in Africa
UGM Studio, Trg Leona Štukelj 2
15 November 2019 – 11 January 2020
opening: Friday, 15 November 2019, 19:00

The exhibition presents work of students and mentors at the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Ljubljana in the framework of international development cooperation and humanitarian assistance.

Students, under the guidance of mentors, plan and build schools, kindergartens and other social institutions in economically neglected countries, consequently helping to address the spatial and life hardships of the population. In the years 2010-19, five buildings were built in the South African Republic, Uganda and Gambia.
Building in Africa is an opportunity for learning, collaborating and exchanging ideas between students and local people, and thus an opportunity to connect different skills, experiences, cultures and people.
The work of students is based on understanding of natural features, knowledge of local architecture, materials and methods of construction, social and economic conditions, and the search for new solutions. Their solutions are therefore easier to transfer to local construction, which improves the living conditions of people and positively affect the local economy.

Such construction is also an opportunity for community building. Construction is a collective work in which the participation of all - the students, mentors, local workers, future users of buildings and other residents is important.
