Ognjen Ranković: Yugo logo
Graphic Identification in Yugoslavia, volume 2
Yugo logo: graphic identification in Yugoslavia, volume 2 brings 169 logos, monograms and symbols from the territory of Yugoslavia in the period from 1945 to 1991, to the graphic standards manuals in 1984 Sarajevo.
Yugo logo is a research project initiated in 2019 by Belgrade based graphic designer Ognjen Ranković aka oran.design. The basic starting point of the project lies in the fact that most of these graphic symbols, created more than half a century ago, are considered extremely high quality solutions and up to modern standards. Their influence on today’s (local) design, but also on the establishment of collective aesthetic criteria, is by no means negligible, which makes the topic of the whole research – albeit seemingly archaic – very up-to-date.
''A graphic mark has no original, material and size. Each is an original, they are produced in all materials and sizes. A mark is a signature, so the author does not sign it. A mark is condensed story, sometimes several different stories, which have been reduce to one short word. The word turns into a picture, which we read with one glance: we see and remember it faster than we understand it. The mark is the more beautiful part of the story. Each mark is a new love, and love is dreamed and thought about, everything gets mixed up, and therefore it is not known how a mark is created. The mark is a sweet sorrow.'' (Miloš Ćirić, 1982)
