Ognjen Ranković: Yugo logo
Graphic Identification in Yugoslavia

Yugo logo is a research project initiated in 2019 by Belgrade based graphic designer Ognjen Ranković aka oran.design. The basic starting point of the project lies in the fact that most of these graphic symbols, created more than half a century ago, are considered extremely high quality solutions and up to modern standards. Their influence on today’s (local) design, but also on the establishment of collective aesthetic criteria, is by no means negligible, which makes the topic of the whole research – albeit seemingly archaic – very up-to-date.

The book contains more than 400 signs and logos from the former Yugoslavia, dating from the mid-20th century to the 1990s, and serving as a kind of "hall of fame" for some of the most important and prolific designers in the field of visual communication.

»The industrial designer in socialist Yugoslavia was an anonymous architect/industry worker like any other, while the graphic designer was often a trained artist who, as a rule or on occasion, "flirted with the commercial". With the exception of a number of individuals and collectives, authorship was rarely or never stated. Yet, despite a lack of higher-education institutions offering education in design (beyond the confines of art or architecture), design was plainly and widely present in the everyday lives of Yugoslav citizens. The process of listening to and recording the stories of those who participated in creating the history of Yugoslav design reveals shared motives and motivations. They all claim to have wanted to expand the boundaries of good living and good taste, at least to a small degree. They loved to work and create; it was never only about the money.« (Sanja Rotter, 2023)
