Slavko Tihec. The Emergence of Form
Drawings, Sketches and Photographs from the Estate of Slavko Tihec
Umetnostna galerija Maribor, Strossmayerjeva 6 – Ground floor
Opening: Friday, 4 March 2016, at 18:00

After a whole twelve years since the comprehensive retrospective exhibition of works by Slavko Tihec (1928−1993), Maribor Art Gallery again calls attention to his body of works. This time the Gallery presents a selection of sculptures from the artist's recently acquired legacy. Even though the majority of the material is documentary and only partially interfaces with the artist's exciting and innovative creative path, this fresh acquisition offers a valuable insight into the sculptor's creative process, especially the emergence of demanding sculptural projects. The story is based on carefully gathered photographic documents (over 200 negatives and a large number of contact prints), original sketches, outlined in pencil or marker, and particularly numerous wash drawings provide a special enticement.

The exhibition project was commenced in collaboration with the co-worker Breda Ilich Klančnik, former curator at Maribor Art Gallery and an authority on Tihec's works, and constitutes an introduction to a thorough documentation and assessment of the acquired legacy. At the same time it is an opportunity to reflect upon the protection and destiny of Slovenian public monuments.

Janko J. Zadravec was Tihec's co-worker in the competition for the National Liberation War Memorial in Donja Gradina in 1979 and also contributed significantly to Tihec's large retrospective exhibition at Maribor Art Gallery in 2003. Now Zadravec has once more provided the design of the present exhibition.
