opening: Friday, 23 February 2024, 19:00

curator: Breda Kolar Sluga

Metka Kavčič, one of Maribor's most prolific artists, presents a unique spatial installation for the first time in the UGM Studio. The focus will be on "her theme" - lace, which will connect intimate sculptures cast in bronze with large sculptures created in plastic. Over the last decade, the artist has been talking about the harmony of our times. And the works in the exhibition can be read in temporal dimensions, the changes implied touching on the materiality of art as well as the social and personal. The challenge for the artist is to test the limits of design and to discover new material effects. Through these, she also calls the viewer to critically evaluate the phenomena of our time, to unravel the traces of destruction and to confront the threat to survival.

METKA KAVČIČ (b. 1960), after completing her studies in art education at the Faculty of Education in Maribor, in 1987 completed her studies in sculpture under prof. Slavko Tihec at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana. In 1990, she completed a specialisation in restoration and conservation at the same institution under prof. Franc Kokalj In 1998, she undertook professional training in Paris. She has held more than 50 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions, and in 2021 she was awarded the prestigious Maribor Prize for Cultural Achievement, the Glazer's Charter for Artistic Achievement. Since 2000 she has been working as a freelance artist in the field of culture, living and working in Maribor.
