Little Beasts in Paintings and as Puppets is a new collaboration between the Maribor Art Gallery, the Maribor Puppet Theatre and the Maribor Public Library. In 2023, the Maribor Art Gallery and the Maribor Puppet Theatre, together with the University of Maribor Library, organised an exhibition to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of Slovenian artist Janez Vidic. This time they are drawing from their collections to prepare a thematic exhibition about animals captured in artworks and puppets.
Animals can be the main character in a visual artwork or in a puppet performance, but they can also accompany people. Whether friendly, fearsome, dynamic, humanised by the beast fable or with distinctly animalistic traits, animals are often and gladly depicted in art. People and nature often remind us of an animal double and we recognise human traits and characteristics in animals. This is why their depictions are so frequent and picturesque. The same applies to the literary illustration of books for children and young people. We have therefore entered into a collaboration with the Maribor Public Library, which will contribute a number of works to the exhibition that will expand and round off the selection from the rich repositories of the two public institutions, the Maribor Art Gallery and the Maribor Puppet Theatre.
In 2024, both institutions celebrate an important anniversary of their activities: the Maribor Art Gallery celebrates its 70th anniversary and the Maribor Puppet Theatre its 50th anniversary. We have therefore prepared a special offer for the public, namely admission to two museums for the price of one ticket. Tickets will be sold at both locations.
