After a long time, the Maribor Art Gallery is once again showing an exhibition by Jože Šubic. The exhibited works were created as a relaxing “break" during the creation of the cycle of large-format paintings Take a Picture, with which they are also thematically connected. The eroticised images provoke and encourage the viewer in their dichotomy between passive voyeurism and active experience of their own romantic and sexual imaginary. As in the past, Šubic recycles his old works on paper and combines watercolour with printmaking, drawing and acrylic to create a potent new visual whole.
Jože Šubic was born in Maribor in 1958 and studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana, where he specialised in painting under the guidance of Prof. Gustav Gnamuš in 1984. He works in a variety of fields, in the mediums of sculpture and painting, printmaking and drawing. Throughout his career as an independent artist, he has exhibited and participated in art colonies in Slovenia and internationally. He has received numerous awards and honours. His works can be found in the permanent collections of the Maribor Art Gallery, the Murska Sobota Gallery, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Koroška in Slovenj Gradec, the Triglav Insurance Company and Nova Ljubljanska banka, as well as in private collections.
