Highlights of UGM Collection
UGM l Maribor Art Gallery, Strossmayerjeva 6
8 April – 9 May 2010
Opening: Thursday, 8 April 2010 at 19:00
The new exhibition of the Maribor Art Gallery permanent collection presents the best and most representative artwork chronologically representing the course of Slovene 20th century fine arts, emphasizing the authors creating in the broad Maribor region. The exhibition begins with realist artwork from the end of the 19th century and beginning of the 20th century, the Slovene Avant-Garde of the 1920’s and artwork under the influence of New-Realism tending towards objective presentations of the world. Further paintings and sculptures belong to the Colour-Realism period of the 30’s and 40’s, followed by the Modernism of the 50’s with its broader artistic freedom and the Abstracts of the 60’s derived from objectivity but already deviating from this style. Other exhibited artworks feature Geometrical Abstraction and its rational approach, followed by Figurativism and Conceptual Art engaged with ideas and concepts. In the 80’s and 90’s diverse individual styles replaced the collective art streams and they were ranged into the broad genres of Abstraction or Figurativism (New Age). Alongside new forms of artistic expression (performance, land art, installation, audio-visual art,…) both genres are still up-to-date, as the new contemporary production will show. This exhibition presents some of the best artwork of the Maribor Art Gallery permanent collection.
Artwork acquired by repurchase, donations or sponsors in the last two years will be presented to the public for the first time as well.
