We are pleased to announce the solo exhibition of Bart Lunenburg, a multidisciplinary artist of younger generation from the Netherlands. The exhibition is a collaboration between UGM | Maribor Art Gallery and RAVNIKAR Projects, a Ljubljana-based arts organisation, working with emerging voices in contemporary art.
For his first solo exhibition in Maribor, Lunenburg investigates the city’s textile producing heritage as a key component of its architectural, social, and cultural fabric. The project builds on his ongoing research into the work of architect Jože Plečnik, developed during his 2024 residency at Švicarija (MGLC) and subsequent exhibition To Decide Where the Shadow Falls at Plečnik House in Ljubljana. In Maribor, Lunenburg expands this inquiry by connecting Plečnik’s recurring references to textiles and weaving with the city’s history as a major centre of textile industry. Through archival research, extended on-site observation, and material experimentation, he explores how rhythms of labour, gendered production, and industrial memory are embedded in architecture. Approaching the city as a “garment”, Lunenburg seeks to reveal how textiles have shaped Maribor’s urban form and collective memory. As part of the project, the artist will undertake a residency in Maribor during the summer months.
Bart Lunenburg’s multidisciplinary practice explores architecture as a carrier of memory, history, and lived experience. Working primarily with scale models, his research-based approach translates archival materials and prolonged, site-specific observation into sculptures, photographs, drawings, textiles, and installations. By inhabiting buildings and sites over extended periods, Lunenburg seeks to “excavate” their layered lives – materials, ideologies, and emotional residues – and reframe them as autonomous objects and narratives. His work reflects a sustained interest in how architecture absorbs human desires, fears, and contradictions, treating buildings and cities as entities with memories of their own.
Bart Lunenburg (1995, Utrecht, NL) graduated with honours in photography from the University of the Arts Utrecht in 2017, having studied art history at the University of Amsterdam concurrently from 2016 to 2018. His work has received attention both in the Netherlands and internationally. Recent presentations include Atelier NŌUA (Bodø, NO); Plečnik House (Ljubljana, SI); RAVNIKAR (Ljubljana, SI); Lustwarande (Tilburg, NL); Warmoes Biennale (Amsterdam, NL); Van Gogh House (London, UK); Kunsthal KAdE (Amersfoort, NL); Museum Catharijneconvent (Utrecht, NL); Buitenplaats Doornburgh (Maarssen, NL); Drawing Centre Diepenheim (Diepenheim, NL); FOTODOK / Casco Art Institute (Utrecht, NL); Garage Rotterdam (Rotterdam, NL); Museum Flehite (Amersfoort, NL); P/////AKT (Amsterdam, NL); Prospects at Art Rotterdam (Rotterdam, NL); Unseen Photo Fair; and Art Brussels (BE).
