Contemporary Slovenian Illustration
Exhibition of the 14th Slovenian Biennial of Illustration
UGM | Maribor Art Gallery, Strossmayerjeva ulica 6
15 April – 31 July 2022
The Maribor Art Gallery is proud to present the major exhibition of the 14th Slovenian Biennial of Illustration! The exhibition offers an overview of excellence, diversity and creative charge of contemporary Slovenian illustration. The exhibition presents more than 80 authors with original illustrations from recent years. In addition, visitors can browse through more than 50 books illustrated with originals from the exhibition.
The Biennial of Illustration is organised by Cankarjev dom in tandem with the Slovenian Association of Fine Arts Societies since 1993. For more than a quarter of a century, this art event has united illustrators across generations and recognised their highest achievements with the Hinko Smrekar Award and other prizes. This year, the biennial exhibition will travel to Maribor for the very first time.
In this edition of the biennial, special attention is paid to illustrator Daniel Demšar, recipient of the Hink Smrekar Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition, 13 other prizes were announced. The biennial catalogue, which can be purchased at the UGM museum shop, presents all the prize recipients and all participants in the exhibition with an example of their work.
Over the years the biennial has retained its creative power and has repeatedly revealed the excellence of Slovenian illustration with a variety of authorial poetics, while monitoring new artistic expressions and solutions, as artists develop new techniques, introduce elements of moving image, comics, animation, digital media and other new technologies.
The biennial is proud of its role of promoting the medium of illustration, which particularly through illustration for children is indispensable in introducing young audiences to visual art of the highest quality. As such, illustration is essential in its educational role, where, as a pictorial language, it helps children develop awareness and artistic sensibility.
