“On Wednesday, December 8 1920 at 10 in the morning, in three south-facing rooms on the first floor of the Slovene national theatre in the former casino hall the first art exhibition opened in Maribor. The exhibition was proposed by painter Viktor Cotič, while General Rudolf Maister served as its honorary patron. 28 artists exhibited over 180 artworks. The event prompted a significant response: the first fine art society was established; the media echoed the responses that problematised the concepts of national and fine art. Soon after, the first artwork was purchased for the gallery and a proposal was put together for a permanent exhibition space and an institution that would support fine arts professionally. The 1920s exhibition is therefore rightfully seen as the beginning of organized activities in the field of fine arts in our city.
Our exhibition will illuminate the events of the first exhibition and summarize, informatively, 100 years of history.
The exhibition will be moved online after 18 April.
