UGM SEMINAR / LECTURE
War memorials between art and politics
Thursday, 28 May 2015, at 18.00
UGM | Maribor Art Gallery, Strossmayerjeva 6, Maribor
lecture by: dr. Barbara Murovec, head of the France Stele Institute of Art History - ZRC SAZU and assistant professor at the Department of Art History at the Faculty of Arts, University of Maribor

In the light of two big anniversaries, one hundred years since the beginning of the First World War and seventy years since the end of World War II, numerous events took place. However, they rarely explored the consequences of the two wars and the ways they have affected society. The lecture will analyze the artistic realization, spatial placements, functions, messages, and current use of public monuments on the example of monuments of the 20th century in Slovenia, War Memorials, and those (political) "post-productions" that have contributed to the fact that Slovenia is not (yet) a knowledge-based society, a culturally and socially open space but an ideological battleground and crisis hot spot.

The lecture will be in Slovenian.
