Guided Tour of the Vurnik Workers’ Colony and Visit to One of the Housing Units
Saturday, 15 November 2025, 11:00–12:00
Meeting point: Vurnik Workers’ Colony, intersection of Cesta zmage and Fochova Ulica
Guide: Lana Topolovec (architect, founder of Labikum Architecture, collaborator of the Center for Architecture Slovenia)
The Vurnik Workers’ Colony is considered an exceptional example of workers’ housing settlement design. In its comprehensive realization, Vurnik—who had studied similar architectural solutions across Europe for several years—demonstrated a deep understanding of the socio-political aspects of residential construction as well as architectural and theoretical sophistication. Under expert guidance, we will explore in situ the design, history, and context behind the creation of this first example of a row-house settlement in Slovenia, and together with local residents, we will enter one of the housing units. We will discuss the development and transformation of the settlement, the quality of living, and the heritage of workers’ communities.
You are warmly invited to this free guided tour! The number of places is limited, so we kindly ask you to register in advance.
Registration: Živa Kleindienst, ziva.kleindienst@ugm.si
The exhibition and program are part of Vurnik Days 2025, produced in collaboration with the Center arhitekture Slovenije, with support from the Municipality of Maribor and the Radovljica Local Community.
