Guided Tour of the Exhibition Architect Ivan Vurnik: Then and Now, 1884–2024
Saturday, 29 November 2025, 11:00
Promenade of the City Park, Ulica heroja Tomšiča
Guide: Lana Topolovec (architect, founder of Labikum Architecture, associate of the Center for Architecture Slovenia)
At the conclusion of the exhibition on the work of architect, urban planner, professor, and innovator Ivan Vurnik—who left his mark in Maribor as well with the so-called workers’ housing colony—we invite you to the final guided tour with architect Lana Topolovec. She will lead us through selected examples of Vurnik’s oeuvre. We will learn about the architect’s major works as well as some lesser-known projects, such as the Archbishop’s Chapel in Trieste, the sanatorium in Golnik, the Sokol Hall in Tabor (Ljubljana), the Aljaž Chapel in Vrata, the workers’ settlement in Maribor, the Obla Gorica swimming baths in Radovljica, the monument to composer Jurij Fleišman in Beričevo near Ljubljana, and the urban planning scheme for Bled. Individual works are presented through reproductions of original plans, preserved photographs, and contemporary photographs by architectural photographer Miran Kambič. The photographs of the present-day condition reflect the users’ relationship to the architecture—its preservation, care, and, at the same time, its transformation over time.
The exhibition was prepared by the Center for Architecture Slovenia and the Museum of Architecture and Design on the occasion of the 140th anniversary of Ivan Vurnik’s birth, offering a new perspective on the architect’s oeuvre and presenting his influence on the development of Slovenian architecture.
The exhibition and program are part of Vurnik Days 2025, produced in collaboration with the Center arhitekture Slovenije, with support from the Municipality of Maribor and the Radovljica Local Community.
The general sponsor of the project in Maribor is Energija Plus.
