Guided by: Simona Vidmar, UGM curator, and Ervin Hladnik Milharčič, journalist

Heroes We Love charges onto the controversial field of socialist heroic art in order to recognize those protagonists who brought the monumental art of the early post-war period to its peak. Five selected examples of socialist realism from the region of former Yugoslavia constitute the foundation of the exhibition: the Soviet-inspired Monument to the Red Army Fighters by Antun Augustinčić; the heroic mural in Villa Bled by Slavko Pengov; the double relief of the Tomb of the Liberators of Belgrade by Rade Stanković; the monumental figurality of Monument to Resistance and Torment by Lojze Dolinar in Kraljevo; and the unrealized Monument to Marx and Engels by Vojin Bakić. A network of models, influences, parallels and divergences revolves around these five examples. As a parallel research component in the broader field of art and ideology we introduce interventions by contemporary artists, with a view to moving away from monuments of failed revolutions and striving toward contemporary approach to structuring memory.

The curator of the exhibition Simona Vidmar and journalist Ervin Hladnik Milharčič will be discussing the importance of the exhibition for modern times. The guided tour will be in Slovene.

YOU ARE KINDLY INVITED!
