Friends of the UGM gathering and opening of the 130 KMH exhibition at Studio Habitat
Friday, 15 December 2023, 19:00
Studio Habitat, Trubar street 2, Maribor

Friends of the Maribor Art Gallery are invited to a festive gathering on Friday, 15 December 2023, organised together with Studio Habitat. There, at 2 Trubarjeva Street, we will toast the coming year and say goodbye to the past one with the event's sponsor, Radgonske gorice and their golden champagne.

The social event will be followed by the opening of the 130 KMH sales exhibition at 19:00. This is how we connect with the spaces and actors that co-shape the creative happenings in the city. The exhibition will be on show until 31 January 2024.

130 KMH
Artist: Eva Bevec, Jure Brglez, Rene Ketiš, Ema Kobal, Petra Korent, Miha Majes, Matija Medved, Matic Pandel, Hana Podvršič and Hana Jelovšek, Nejc Prah, Tereza Prepadnik, Lucija Rosc, Jaka Teršek, Primož Zorko

The 130 KMH exhibition offers a reflection on the relativity of space (km) and time (h). It is well known that the journey from Maribor to Ljubljana is shorter than the journey from Ljubljana to Maribor. If we measure them, the journeys in both directions should be the same length - 130 km - but we know from experience that this is not the case.

But the youngest generation of Slovenian artists does not care about this, because they are aware that the distance between Maribor and Ljubljana is negligible, if we think of Los Angeles or Hong Kong. Why shouldn't Slovenia be one "metropolitan area" - "Greater Ljubljana" - where Maribor is its coolest and "up-and-coming" neighbourhood?

This status of Maribor is also confirmed by Gal Šnajder, who has gathered 15 artists, designers, illustrators, photographers around him and his groundbreaking Maribor graphic workshop to demonstrate how in tune with the zeitgeist they are. In an exercise in relativity, their brand new works are juxtaposed with Studio Habitat's existential simulacrum, where they challenge you to take them home and compose them in new contexts.
