Friday, 24 November (11:30-18:00), Tuesday, 28 November (8:30-14:30) & Thursday, 30 November 2023 (8:30-14:30)

UGM | Maribor Art Gallery have partnered with the two preeminent secondary schools in Maribor, Prva gimnazija Maribor and II. gimnazija Maribor, in the framework of the European project EMPACT in order to introduce the themes of empathy and sustainability and the relationship between them to the students of both institutions.

The artists Ana Pečar and Vid Koprivšek, both former students of Prva gimnazija Maribor, have been invited to present their artistic practices to the students and prepare creative workshops based on their individual approaches to art. They will enter the students’ classrooms, supported by the mentorship of their teacher, artist and pedagogue Natalija Rojc Črnčec, and lead the classes in guided investigation of artistic expression in relation to the environment under the slogan "The art of thinking like a mountain". In their work, both Ana Pečar and Vid Koprivšek ascribe meaning to states and actions occurring in nature and thus think through the role of art as a mediator between the indifference of nature and our relationship to it. They will speak to the role of the artists to understand and to interpret their environment, but also to endure and to thrive in it.

Ana Pečar's video based practice revolves around intangible, subtle, yet expressive scenes of nature. Spanning installations, photographs and ambient interventions, Pečar works to offer contemplative spaces, buffered from the outer fast pace world. Taking inspiration from various sources, from long visual scenes of Tarkovsky or Kurosawa to indigenous relational living, Pečar addresses the power of potent serenity. Her recent projects include Spell against snake sting at Pixxelpoint in Nova Gorica and Minoriti in Maribor (2023), Musicville (Austria, Croatia, Slovenia, 2023) and When I was not around at Mestna galerija Nova Gorica (2019). In 2023 she was a NAHR fellow at the residency organised in the framework of EMPACT.

Vid Koprivšek graduated from Ljubljana’s Academy of Fine Arts and Design in painting and is about to complete the MA programme Video and New Media. He works at the intersection of digital and physical media – of contemporary painting and sculpture practices, computer graphics and intermedia installations. He has received the Academy’s Prešeren Prize for his BA thesis. In addition to the solo projects Swarm Entry at Aksioma (2023) and Polymer Ooze (with Matej Mihevc) at DobraVaga (2022), Koprivšek’s work has been presented in several group exhibitions: Terminal Drift at the MoTA LAB (2022), Ni belega platna at Mala galerija BS (2020) and Looking Forward at the DLUL Gallery (2022).

EMPACT workshops facilitate and encourage creative discussion and support informal learning about compassion and sustainability through diverse artistic and environmental practices. The EMPACT project is supported by the Creative Europe programme of the European Union.
