18. 10. 2025 Cycling Guided Tour of Maribor's Workers' Colonies

Cycling Guided Tour of Maribor's Workers' Colonies: Railway, Vurnik, and Hutter Colony
Saturday, 18 October, 2025, 14:30–16:00
meeting point: in front of Hotel Tabor

We will cycle through three working-class neighborhoods in Maribor. Our journey will begin in the oldest railway colony (orig. Železničarska kolonija, 1863-1874, architect: Gustav Heinrich Flattich, between Ulica Gorkega and the former Carinthian railway station), continue to Vurnik colony (1928-1933, architect: Ivan Vurnik, between Betnavska and Focheva ulica), and end in the Hutter colony (1936-1937, architect: Rudolf Kiffman, Ulica Štravhovih). During the tour of the three colonies of terraced houses and semi-detached houses, the architects will shed light the historical aspects of the emergence of workers' colonies, and present the architectural and urban planning principles of their design and construction. We will talk about the heritage, preservation, and current state of workers' colonies.

The cycling tour will be accompanied by a representative of the Maribor Cycling Network.

Guided tour is free of charge.
