Trees have many benefits for us and our planet: they help cleaner air, lower temperatures in summer, reduce noise, reduce pollution along busy roads, help mitigate climate change, and make the environment healthier, more pleasant and more beautiful. Trees are magic machines, says Dr Maja Simoneti, landscape architect. It is important to be aware of them, take good care of them and protect them. Throughout art history, trees have been a common motif for artists. They have been depicted as symbols (e.g. the tree of life or the tree of knowledge in Christian art) or painted as part of landscapes or landscapes because of their beauty and grandeur. However, in the wake of the environmental crisis, more and more contemporary artists are focusing their work on ecological issues and on the relationship between people and nature - including trees. Their art projects draw attention to the crisis and influence change in society and nature.

As part of the European Mobility Week, the Maribor Art Gallery joins the events organised by the Faculty of Civil Engineering, Transportation Engineering and Architecture of the University of Maribor and the Municipality of Maribor on Smetanova ulica. We will hold workshops with groups of children from the surrounding primary schools to pay tribute to the trees in the immediate vicinity. At the beginning, the children will read their pre-written speeches to the trees, followed by workshops where we will use environmentally friendly materials to draw attention to the trees and come up with ideas for more trees in the city.
