The artistic career of Jože Šubic can be divided into three periods: firstly, the years of his studies and initial quest defined by the flat painting of a Matisse-like palette; secondly, the first years of maturity when he dedicated himself to the whirlpool of new figurativeness; and, thirdly, the 1990's, marked by greater serenity and new visual and contextual formulations. Nevertheless, Šubic's paintings of these three periods have in common a distinctly sensual attitude towards the colour and non-painting materials which he uses as carriers of both visual and symbolic content, and a specific iconographic selection, ranging from the mythical archetypal stories to the complex meanings of everyday objects.
