Stojan Kerbler - a retrospective
UGM I Maribor Art Gallery, Strossmayerjeva 6
23 August – 3 November 2019
opening: Friday, 23 August 2019, 19:00

Stojan Kerbler retrospective exhibition, taken over by the Maribor Art Gallery from the Moderna galerija in Ljubljana, covers a wide range of Kerbler's works: from the late 1950s to the early part of 2014.

Stojan Kerbler (b.1938) is a pivotal figure of Slovenian photography. A large retrospective exhibition, conceived on the occasion of the artist's 80th anniversary under the auspices of the Museum of Modern Art in Ljubljana, presents his extensive body of work. His oeuvre spans from the earliest photographs of the locals from Ptujska Gora taken in the late 1950s and photographs from his student years in Ljubljana, which are followed by the series Portraits from the Streets of Ptuj and two exceptional series People of Haloze and Pig Slaughter, which consolidated Kerbler’s recognisable personal style and earned him international recognition. The exhibition concludes with factory photographs and the Courtyards series, in which Kerbler was drawn to the traces of time layered on house facades in the ancient town of Ptuj.

curator: Lara Štrumej

The exhibition in the Maribor Art Gallery will also include a selection of original silver gelatin photos lamented on the ivory board, mostly created in the seventies of the past century, which the author donated to the gallery in 2017.

Stojan Kerbler (b. 1938, Ptujska Gora) was employed as an energy engineer at the Aluminum Factory in Kidričevo all from 1965, when he graduated from the Faculty of Electrical Engineering in Ljubljana, until 2000, when he retired. He began his photographic journey in 1953 at the Photoclub Ptuj. During his studies in Ljubljana he and his friends founded the student Photogroup ŠOLT. After graduation, from 1965 he was a member of the Photoclub Maribor and also a member of the avant-garde photographic group Maribor Circle (1971 - 1974), which with its first exhibition in 1971 at the Rotovž Exhibition Hall was strongly echoed in the Slovene and then Yugoslav space. Kerbler stood out with his differentness. In 1969, he was first named the best exhibitor of Slovenia and in 1970 of Yugoslavia, after which he also managed to retain this prestigious title for a dozen years. He is a great connoisseur of older Slovenian photography, especially deserving of research of the opus of Fran Krašovac. He lives and works in Ptuj and Ptujska Gora.
