Second Half, Contemporary Slovak Photography
UGM l Maribor Art Gallery, Strossmayerjeva 6
Opening: Friday, 22 October 2010 at 19:00

The exhibition of contemporary Slovak photography - Second Half - presents nine young Slovak photographers: Ján Šipöcz, Iva Sýkorová, Maija Laurinen, Šymon Kliman, Ján Palkovič, Juraj Fifik, Ján Kekelij, Dalibor Krupka and Lucia Stráňaiova. Presentation of the so-called new generation or “transition generation” provides interesting insight into the development of Slovak photography after the period of individualism, from 1989 onwards. The exhibition shows the differences between the artists enabled by the democratic photography media. Although each artist has his own individual style and independent reflection they are connected by their experience of space and time. They all talk about end of life, loneliness, sadness and decline. However this isn’t an exhibition presenting the dark and negative feelings, above all it’s an exhibition surveying originality, talent, achievements, friendship and technical perfection.

Second Half is a result of the collaboration between Maribor Art Gallery, Photoportgallery from Bratislava, in the last few years taking care of promotion, research and theory in the field of photography in Slovakia and Photon Gallery, organizer of the photography festival Photonic Moments – Month of Photography 2010.
