UGM I Maribor Art Gallery, Strossmayerjeva 6
Opening: Thursday, 28 January 2010 at 19:00

Petra Varl presents a series of ink drawings on paper and leads us back to the important story of her work from her creative beginnings onwards. With her drawing and simple motifs of everyday life she builds an intimate and at the same time familiar universe: the meaning of a woman and her role, relationships, the tearing down of clichés, and the antagonism of old and new… The fragments create a parallel story in which the individual, appearing in diverse roles at the same time, can find him/herself.

Petra Varl (b.1965, Ljubljana). She graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Ljubljana where she also gained an MA in 1997. She works as a visual artist in the field of drawing, graphic art, painting, illustration and space installations (at galleries, in public and private spaces). She has exhibited her work in numerous solo and group exhibitions, including the São Paolo Biennial. Since 2000 she has been working as an Associate Professor of drawing and graphic arts at the Fine Arts Department of the Teacher’s College of the University of Maribor. She lives and works in Ljubljana and Maribor.
