This October UGM | Maribor Art Gallery is joining in the celebration of Maribor Day 2022 with an exhibition of some well-known and other lesser-known images of our hometown by nearly 30 artists from the UGM Collection. We encounter Maribor as seen by artists of the past 100 years – from the 1900s to the 2000s. We are taken on a journey through classic vistas – a view of the old town along the river Drava, the main square with the plague column, Lent’s historic alleyways, the cathedral and the city castle – to less common scenes of the township’s edge, new town districts and the town park. Maribor was a popular motif for artists who called Maribor home, as well as for those who only stayed in Maribor a short while, working or otherwise. Among the selection of images of Maribor, we may highlight prints by Josip Pipo Peteln, Viktor Cotič and Oton Polak, drawings from the sketchbooks of Ida Brišnik Remec and Marjan Remec, as well as painting of Maribor squares, streets and the old bridge by Zoran Mušič, Karel Jirak and Fredy Koschitz. Of the images of Maribor in the UGM Collection – which could fill the entire gallery - we paid special attention to those artworks that are only rarely on display, thus uncovering the rich and varied character of treasures kept by UGM | Maribor Art Gallery.

Mariborians (and others) are invited to cast their vote Image of Maribor 2022 and taking part in the selection of the winning motif. With the closing of the exhibition, the selected artwork will be reproduced and will be available for you to buy to take home!

In preparation for the exhibition, we invited Mariborians to contact us with information about images of Maribor from private collections and to share with us their stories of how the artworks came into family homes. We have heard from many and a selection of received images is displayed in a video document as part of the exhibition.

With the exhibition, we are merrily joining in the celebration of Maribor Day 2022, which takes place annually on 20 October, when in 1164 Maribor was first mentioned in a written document. Let's celebrate together! More about Maribor Day 2022.
