MAKS AND THE NEW UGM FOR THE URBAN AND CULTURAL TRANSFORMATION OF MARIBOR
Central development project of the Municipality of Maribor within Maribor 2012 - European Capital of Culture is about building a new house for the Maribor Art Gallery. New gallery spaces will be positioned in the Cultural Centre Maribor (MAKS) at embankment of the river Drava. New contemporary art gallery and centre of performance arts originated in the authorship of Sadar + Vuga Architects, one of the most prominent architectural firms in Slovenia. By placing a new cultural centre on the right bank of the river Drava a fresh cultural impulse will be set into the urban post-industrial landscape, which aims to attract visitors from Slovenia and abroad by diverse program and excellent contents.
At her new address the New UGM will acquire contemporary exhibition area of 3000 m2 and position itself alongside the world-famous museums of visual art. The new space will allow both, permanent exhibition of the rich collection of Slovenian art, which until now spent most of the time in the gallery depot, as well as eminent exhibitions of international art and hosting of prestigious contemporary art. In this new space the gallery will expand educational and research activities, provide more comfort for visitors and broaden services for day and evening guests - from restaurant and club to shops and lecture rooms.
The location on the right embankment of the river Drava, from where you can see the beautiful Lent and the old town, and the attractive architectural design of MAKS, will without any doubt place the new city acquisition amongst the most recognizable architectural monuments of the region. UGM helps creating the story of urban and cultural transformation of Maribor.
