Workshop with Polona Maher / »CUT-OUT«
Maribor Art Gallery, Strossmayerjeva 6
wednesday, 28. And thursday, 28.  june 2017, 16.00-18.00
guided by: Polona Maher, academic sculptress and art teacher

»Can we put a drawing into an area of space without it being tied up on a plain surface such as paper, canvas, wall or the floor? What new and unexpected qualities does a drawing itself obtain with that? Can we cut it out and not only draw it or paint it, for it to still remain a drawing? Can a drawing have a shadow?” Those and similar questions have been the subject of interest for Maribor artist Polona Maher since 2004. At first she devoted herself to manually cutting motives out of cardboard, later on, when the work became more and more complex, she switched to computerized cutting. Polona Maher has an exquisite sense of interpreting everyday life. She knows how to transform it into something extraordinary and after all, how to spice it up with a pinch of humour.

Throughout the workshop we will get to know her line of work. The artist will get the participants involved in the process of transferring subjects into two-dimensional drawings with different cutting techniques. Oddity, playfulness and humour will be prioritised before the aspect of technical perfection. The participants will be able to hang the created drawings in their homes and even may need to dust them every once in a while!
IMPORTANT: Every participant must bring along a subject, which he will be able to apply to the piece, they will be creating at the workshop. Such as a: flower, lamp, book, wall clock, handbag, shoe with a heel, mobile phone with headphones and…(mandatory) a piece of string. Some items will also be available for use at the gallery. There will also be all the material, needed for work. We will cut things out of paper with wallpaper knives.
