gathering point: Maribor Art Gallery, Strossmayerjeva 6
6. and 27. July + 3. and 24. August 2017, 18.00

Among the summer of culture in UGM events, join us on four art enriched afternoon bike tours around Maribor in the month of July and August. Among other things, we will get to know a very well-known Maribor photographer, discover public monuments and get closely acquainted with artistic interventions. Every cycling route will be dedicated to a specific theme and will be accompanied by a member of the Maribor cycling network, who will be giving us some useful tips about road safety regarding bicycles.

Monuments will disclose Maribor's history, from the times of the city's industrial boom to the time of World War I and II, revive memories of public personalities who have influenced our city, and disclose contemporary art traces in Maribor.

1. Ivan Dvoršak and the Maribor Circle; Thursday, 6. July 2017, 18.00
point of departure: Maribor Art Gallery, Strossmayerjeva 6; guided by Andreja Borin, UGM senior curator

Ivan Dvoršak (1934 – 2003) was one of the most important Slovenian photographers and graphic designers of the second part of 20. Century. He was one of the most active members of the Maribor Photoclub and also one of the lead protagonists of the Maribor Circle, a photography group that stirred up the Yugoslav photography at the beginning of the seventies. They portrayed a radical modernistic approach in the time when photography still paved its way into gallery spaces.

2. Traces of art in Maribor; Thursday, 27. July 2017, 18.00
point of departure: Maribor Art Gallery, Strossmayerjeva 6; guided by Simona Vidmar, UGM senior curator

Maribor public space is marked with artwork of 20. and 21. Century, created by different generations and styles of artists. We will take a look at the work in public spaces, not created as monuments or Forma viva. We can divide them in following categories: a fountain, a statue, spatial intervention, mosaic, sgraffito, and graphite. A great part of chosen work was created through the second part of the 20. century, especially in the nineties. The oldest known intervention originates from the period before World war II.

3. Public monuments till the end of the 19th century; Thursday, 3. August 2017, 18.00
point of departure: Maribor Art Gallery, Strossmayerjeva 6; guided by Brigita Strnad, UGM senior curator

The public space of Maribor is enriched with various art pieces that the city's inhabitants ordered from different stonecutters, sculptors and painters. The most representative work was public monuments, tombstones and architectural sculptures. The city’s urban development over centuries was marked by building the city walls in the second half of the 13. century. The intensive construction out of the former city lines was noted barely from the second half of the 19. century. Consequently, it is not surprising that most of art traces from the era until the end of the 19. century is condensed around the old part of the city.

4. Forma viva Maribor; Thursday, 24. August 2017, 18.00
