Maribor Art Gallery invites you to the opening of architectural exhibition School for All. You are also welcome to join us for a guided tour of the exhibition before the opening. We will toast with champagne Radgonske gorice on this occasion. Free entrence!

The exhibition presents the work of groups of students and mentors from the Ljubljana Faculty of Architecture and the Roof for All society (Streha za vse) as part of international development cooperation and humanitarian aid. In cooperation with humanitarian organisations, the groups are planning and building schools and other public institutions in poor countries. In this way they are contributing to the fulfilment of the UN Sustainable Development Goals, such as access for all children in the world to a safe home, education and healthcare. Between 2010 and 2019 they built a classroom and library (2010) and multipurpose hall (2011) in Johannesburg, South Africa, Amasiko – a transit home for children from the streets (2017) in the town of Kabale in Uganda, a shelter and children’s playground (2018), and a kindergarten (2019) in Brufut in the Gambia.
The work of the groups is based on an understanding of the natural features, the social and economic conditions, local architecture, materials, methods of construction and seeking new ideas as well as on good cooperation with local experts and the transfer of new ideas to local construction, with the aim of improving the living conditions of local people.

The construction of buildings is a school for all those participating – Slovenia students and mentors, local experts and future inhabitants of the buildings. It is a school for exchanging ideas, knowledge and experience. Ultimately, it is also a school for building relations between people of different races, histories, and social and economic backgrounds.
The buildings constructed by the Slovenian groups in cooperation with local residents are a small but significant contribution from educational institutions towards fulfilling the UN Sustainable Development Goals. They show how we can contribute through knowledge and will to solving urgent social problems, and also how even humble architecture can bring about an improvement in people’s lives.
