27 July – 25 August 2018

In the months of July and August, right on time for postcard season, UGM Studio presents the project Postcards from Slovenia, a photographic series by the Fotosfera collective. In collaboration with the Post of Slovenia we’ve installed a post box inside the gallery. Visitors can choose from a selection of postcards and send them to their friends at home and abroad.

Fotosfera, a collective of photographers Andrej Potrč (b. 1976), Vid Jakop (b. 1977), Miro Nunić (b. 1985), Žiga Karl Gričnik (b. 1985) in Jaka Teršek (b. 1997), have been developing Postcards from Slovenia since 2015. In them, they’ve chosen not to depict popular tourist spots, creating an artificial reality by taking away that which gives places a sense of life. Quite contrary, what they seek in their surroundings is what may appear unimportant to the viewer or may even disturb or upset them to a degree. Still, it is unmistakably familiar. With a critical eye and not without a sense of humour, the photographers appear to be turning their cameras in the diametrically opposite direction of the traditional postcard view towards the everyday. Captured moments bring out a sense of something oddly familiar – one may call it the Slovenian uncanny. Postcards from Slovenia reveal the often seen, yet rarely depicted scenes of our everyday, which cut deep into the state of our society today. If postcards of Slovenia depict how we want to be perceived, then Postcards from Slovenia portray how we are.

The photographers, who make up the Fotosfera group, do not sign individual photographs with their own names, rather, they are authors of the series collectively. The group has been shortlisted in a competition during the festival Photonic Moments in Ljubljana. Postcards from Slovenia have been previously shown at Layer House Kranj, but they will be exhibited on larger formats at UGM Studio for the first time.

KINDLY INVITED!
