London Film Festival
Sunday, 17 October 2021
The film The Gift (2021, 27 min) by Jasmina Cibic, made with support from the UGM | Maribor Art Gallery among many others, will premiere in the Experimenta programme of the London Film Festival 2021. The film, directed and written by Jasmina Cibic, is a British-French-Austrian co-production. In addition, the author has been nominated for the prestigious 2021 Jarman Award for the best in contemporary artists’ filmmaking in the UK.
The Gift is a culmination of many years of research by Jasmina Cibic on the topic of the political gift-giving culture. This film features several emblematic buildings, including the French Communist Party Headquarters in Paris, the Palace of Nations in Geneva, the Palace of Culture and Science in Warsaw and the monument on Mount Buzludzha in Bulgaria, all of which constitute gifts in their own right and have established artistic vocabulary at the service of political dramaturgy.
Jasmina Cibic (b. 1979, Ljubljana) is an exceptional artist from a generation of prominent Slovenian artists emerging from the art academy in Venice in the early noughts. At UGM we have collaborated with the artist on numerous projects, solo and group exhibitions, and have followed her transition to the field of experimental film in recent years with great admiration and support. The film The Gift was made possible with support from Steirischer Herbst (Graz), MAC Lyon and the Arts Council of England, and has been previously shown in those contexts as a film-in-progress. In the last three years alone, the artist has presented her work in solo shows in important institutions, such as the Lyon Museum of Contemporary Art, Muzeum Sztuki Lodz, PHI Foundation for Contemporary Art Montréal, BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art Newcastle, CCA Glasgow and +MSUM Ljubljana. She lives and works in London.
