Meet the Masters
Lecture by Maja Smrekar and Simona Semenič
UGM, Maribor Art Gallery
8 May 2018, 18:00

This year's awarding of the Prešeren awards and the Prešeren Fund awards (the highest Slovenian national award for artistic creation) has provoked various responses in the public domain. Strikes were mainly made to the two artists who have been devoting their work to push the limits of the human perception of life and creativity. The conservative audience understood them as provocative, insulting and not worthy of the prize. Partner of the Wom@rts project Maribor Art Gallery has decided to invite the two artists to do the lecture in order to touch the theme of a female artist in the preliminary male art world, and to reflect upon reactions which may have been the result of a misogynistic view of creativity.

Maja Smrekar (born 1978, Brežice) graduated in 2005 at the Sculpture Department of the Academy of Fine Arts and Design in cooperation with AGRFT in Ljubljana. In 2016 she received her MA degree at the ALUO New Media Department in Ljubljana. She has been working in the field of intermedia art for a decade. She has worked with many international institutions such as: the Transmedia Festival in Berlin in Germany, the Musée de l`Homme in Paris in France and the Het Neuwe Institute in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. In 2012 she received the 1st prize in Cynetart at the European Center for the Arts Hellerau (Dresden / Germany). In 2013 she recieved an honorary mention at the Ars Electronica Hybrid Art Festival (Linz / Austria) and the Golden Bird Award for visual visual art. In 2017 she received Prix Ars Electronica 2017 - Zlata nika (Linz, Austria) for the field of hybrid art and the Trend Prize in Ljubljana. In 2018 she received the Prešeren Fund Award for her achievements in the field of intermedia art.

Simona Semenič (born 1975, Ljubljana) is a Slovenian playwright and performer. She completed her dramaturgy studies at the Academy for Theatre, Radio, Film and Television (AGRFT) in Ljubljana.

Simona is a recipient of the Prešeren Fund Award and a three-time winner of the Grum Prize, the highest national award to be bestowed on a playwright in her native Slovenia. Her first award winning play 5boys.si (2008) was translated into twelve languages, staged in several countries in Europe, USA and in the Middle East and also published in several countries outside her homeland.
Simona is also writing, directing and performing autobiographical experimental theatre shows. Her shows received outstanding notices from the audience and from theatre critics and Simona performed them at several festivals in Slovenia and abroad. Simona lives in Ljubljana with her two sons.

This event is part of the Wom@rts Project, co-funded by the Creative Europe Programme of the European Union.
KINDLY INVITED!
