International architectural competition for a new building for UGM / Maribor Art Gallery

With the International Architecture Competition for the New UGM we are on our way towards the transformation of Maribor into a regional, national and European Capital of Culture 2012. The International Architecture Competition unifies tendering tasks for the projects: the New Maribor Art Gallery (UGM), rejuvenation of the River Drava embankments and the new foot bridge over the River Drava. Several hundreds of proposals for the New Maribor Art Gallery, that came from all over the world will be judged by Director of Tate Liverpool Christoph Grunenberg (UK) and architects Peter L. Wilson (AUS), Jürgen Hermann Mayer (GER), Hrvoje Njirić (CRO), Stojan Skalicky (SLO), Matevž Čelik (SLO), Marko Studen (SLO).  

New UGM, to be completed by 2012, on new address and in a new building will become an important cultural centre of the region, the engine of the urban regeneration of the Drava embankment and an example of sustainable architectural planning. The New UGM building will host a collection of Slovenian modern and contemporary art, international art shows and offer heterogeneous programs for all generations. The vision of the New UGM is to develop as an open institution with quality content, to be a driving force of knowledge and creativity and a destination for the whole family.

The architectural solution for the New UGM includes, besides the central gallery spaces (8000m2) the Children’s Museum (700 m2), Center of Creative Industry (1200 m2), Architectural Centre (500 m2), catering space (650 m2) and gallery courtyard (1500 m2). The competition is a tender by the Municipality of Maribor, Association of Architects of Maribor, International Union of Architects and Chamber of Architecture and Spatial Planning Office of Slovenia.
