Newcastle based artist, graphic designer, art director Jimmy Turrell has created a new set of designs for EKO 8, A Letter to the Future, having been invited to use his experimental, layered, collage work within several sites, both inside the MTT textile factory and in the streets and locations around Melje. For EKO 8 responding to the invitation to reflect on the ecological tipping point that has been reached and the lead taken by youth action, Turrell has been focusing on imperatives and commands associated with action, and of not losing time, creating a number of designs with phrases, such as "Do What Matters Now".Turrell works in an intuitive way, using a hands-on process incorporating historical imagery, graphics, and typography. A myriad of printing techniques is used including, screen-printing, risograph printing, and collage.

Turrell's work and references are numerous drawn across 70s & 80s counter culture and science books from former Yugoslavia and elsewhere. They can draw on pop culture, music icons, and politics and are firmly grounded in an analogue process of painting, ripping and printing onto paper, copying, and arranging. His designs and commissions for EKO 8 also incorporate images and typography drawn from the MTT textile archives. "I've always been obsessed with finding the beauty in forgotten and discarded materials and bringing them back to life in a completely new context." (Jimmy Turrell)
